What this trial studies
Adults with type 2 diabetes who meet inclusion criteria will be enrolled to receive Emotional Freedom Technique interventions and compared with a control condition. Outcomes will include measures of diabetes distress, anxiety, self-care behaviors, and likely biomarkers such as hemoglobin A1c. The intervention combines cognitive and somatic tapping procedures intended to reduce negative emotions and promote relaxation. Results will show whether this nonpharmacologic approach improves mental health and related diabetes outcomes in this population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes who do not have a psychiatric diagnosis and agree to participate are the intended candidates.
Not a fit: People with type 1 or gestational diabetes, those with advanced mental health disorders, or those already attending coping courses for diabetes distress are unlikely to benefit from this specific study intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the technique could reduce diabetes-related distress and anxiety and may improve self-care and glycemic control for people with type 2 diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: Small trials of Emotional Freedom Technique for anxiety and stress have reported promising but limited-quality results, and its specific effects in type 2 diabetes remain poorly studied.
