Emergency physicians use ultrasound to perform nerve blocks for hip fracture pain relief.
Ultrasound-Guided Femoral Nerve Block

What this trial studies
This prospective study evaluates the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided femoral nerve blocks performed by emergency physicians for managing pain in patients with hip fractures. It compares the analgesic efficacy and patient satisfaction of this method against traditional pain medications in the emergency department. The primary outcome focuses on the time to pain relief and the reduction of rescue pain medication use, while secondary outcomes assess patient satisfaction and any adverse effects associated with the different pain management approaches.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 20 and older who have sustained hip fractures and are able to stay in the emergency department for at least two hours.
Not a fit: Patients who are hemodynamically unstable, have major trauma in addition to hip fractures, or have chronic opioid use may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide faster and more effective pain relief for patients with hip fractures, enhancing their overall satisfaction and reducing reliance on pain medications.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for pain management, suggesting that this approach could be effective.
