What this trial studies

This study investigates the impact of Vitamin D supplementation on the mental health of mothers with preterm infants and the composition of their breast milk. It aims to address the heightened risk of postpartum depression in these mothers, which can adversely affect both maternal and infant health. By comparing mothers receiving Vitamin D to those receiving a placebo, the study seeks to determine if supplementation can alleviate stress and improve milk quality. The research is conducted in Idaho, focusing on mothers of newborns in this region.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are mothers aged 18 and older who have newborn infants in Idaho.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit include mothers under 18 years of age or those with infants not expected to survive beyond 72 hours.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved mental health outcomes for mothers and better nutritional quality of breast milk for their infants.

How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research into the effects of Vitamin D on mental health, this specific approach focusing on mothers of preterm infants is relatively novel.
