Effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on post-operative atrial fibrillation in heart surgery

Impact of Sodium-glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors on Post-operative Atrial Fibrillation in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Observational Hamad Medical Corporation · NCT06251453

What this trial studies

This observational study evaluates the impact of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on the occurrence of post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in patients undergoing various cardiothoracic surgeries, such as coronary artery bypass grafting and valve replacements. It will analyze data from electronic medical records over a six-year period, focusing on the incidence and characteristics of POAF in patients who have used SGLT2 inhibitors for at least one week prior to surgery. The study aims to identify both effectiveness and safety outcomes related to the use of these medications in the surgical context.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 years old who are undergoing cardiothoracic surgery and have been using SGLT2 inhibitors for at least one week prior to their procedure.

Not a fit: Patients with known atrial fibrillation on anticoagulation or those with chronic kidney disease and a creatinine clearance of less than 25 mL/min may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into the protective effects of SGLT2 inhibitors against post-operative atrial fibrillation, potentially improving patient outcomes after heart surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While there is emerging evidence suggesting the benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors in reducing atrial fibrillation, this specific approach in the context of post-operative outcomes is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
