What this trial studies
This clinical trial investigates the impact of Lotus Seed (Nelumbo nucifera) on Diabetic Sensorimotor Polyneuropathy (DSPN), a complication of type 2 diabetes characterized by nerve damage. Participants diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and neuropathy symptoms will be randomly assigned to receive either Lotus Seed or a placebo over a 12-month period. The study aims to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Lotus Seed, which may promote nerve regeneration and improve motor function. The trial is conducted at a private hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, focusing on the potential benefits of this natural intervention in managing DSPN.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 40 and older with a clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and neuropathy symptoms for at least one year.
Not a fit: Patients with cardiovascular conditions, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract infections, psychological disorders, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a novel dietary intervention to improve nerve health and quality of life for patients with diabetic neuropathy.
How similar studies have performed: While the neuroprotective effects of Lotus Seed are promising, this approach is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in similar studies.
