What this trial studies
This study investigates how wearing different types of face masks affects pulmonary function in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) during 6-Minute Walking Tests (6MWT). Participants will perform three walking tests: one without a mask, one with a simple face mask, and one with an FFP2 mask. Prior to each test, comprehensive pulmonary function assessments will be conducted, including spirometry and blood gas analysis, to evaluate any changes in oxygen levels and overall respiratory function. The goal is to understand the implications of mask-wearing for COPD patients, especially in the context of COVID-19 precautions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals diagnosed with COPD who have been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2.
Not a fit: Patients with known cardiac insufficiency, those on long-term oxygen therapy, or individuals who are immobile may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable insights into safe mask usage for COPD patients, potentially improving their quality of life and safety during respiratory illnesses.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on the specific effects of masks on COPD patients, similar studies have explored respiratory function in various contexts, indicating a need for this investigation.
