What this trial studies

This project aims to evaluate how bariatric surgery impacts muscle structure and function in obese adults. It is a feasibility study conducted at the Royal Derby Hospital, where 12 patients will be assessed before and after surgery. Following surgery, participants will be randomly assigned to either a Resistance Exercise Training group or a standard care group for a 4-week period. The study will span a total of 13-14 weeks, focusing on the integration of exercise post-surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are obese adults aged 18-70 with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 or higher, scheduled for bariatric surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with a BMI of 60 or higher or those deemed unfit for surgery will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance recovery and muscle health in patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific combination of bariatric surgery and exercise interventions is less common, similar studies have shown positive outcomes in muscle health post-surgery.
