What this trial studies
This study investigates the impact of animal-assisted occupational therapy (AAT) on patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS). It employs a randomized, controlled cross-over design involving 30 patients who will receive either AAT or conventional therapy sessions over a six-week period. The primary outcome is the achievement of patient-specific therapeutic goals, assessed using various scales, while secondary outcomes include behavioral reactions and physiological measures. The goal is to determine if AAT can enhance rehabilitation outcomes for these patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who are in a minimally conscious state and are inpatients at REHAB Basel.
Not a fit: Patients with medical contraindications for contact with animals, such as allergies or phobias, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this therapy could improve consciousness and rehabilitation outcomes for patients in a minimally conscious state.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown positive effects of animal-assisted therapy on patients with brain injuries, suggesting potential for success in this novel application.
