What this trial studies
This clinical trial investigates the impact of a single infusion of zoledronic acid on pain and functional status in patients with primary knee osteoarthritis over a six-month period. Conducted at the Department of Rheumatology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the study will enroll 92 participants aged 50 and above, who will be randomly assigned to receive either zoledronic acid or a placebo. Pain levels will be assessed using validated scales, including the WOMAC index and visual analog scale, both before and after the treatment period. The trial aims to provide insights into the efficacy of zoledronic acid for managing knee osteoarthritis symptoms.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 50 years and older diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis.
Not a fit: Patients with known inflammatory arthritis, severe obesity, or prior use of bisphosphonates are unlikely to benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly reduce pain and improve functional status for patients suffering from primary knee osteoarthritis.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of zoledronic acid in osteoarthritis is a novel approach, similar studies have shown promise in other conditions, suggesting potential for success.
