Effect of Platelet Rich Plasma on Thumb Osteoarthritis
A Study on the Effect of High-concentrated Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) on Osteoarthritis in the Thumb Base.
NA · Karolinska Institutet · NCT06193499

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of high-concentration platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections compared to a placebo in reducing pain and disability in patients with thumb base osteoarthritis. It involves 90 participants who will receive either the PRP treatment or a placebo, with outcomes measured at 3 and 6 months post-injection. The primary focus is on pain during load, assessed using a numerical rating scale, along with other patient-rated outcomes such as grip strength and range of motion. Both participants and assessors will be blinded to ensure unbiased results.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals diagnosed with thumb base osteoarthritis classified as Eaton Littler class 1-3.
Not a fit: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, ongoing infections, or severe joint degeneration (Eaton Littler class 4) may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly reduce pain and improve function for patients suffering from thumb base osteoarthritis.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results with PRP injections for various joint conditions, suggesting potential success for this approach in treating thumb osteoarthritis.
