What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effectiveness of early orthodontic intervention for children with palatally displaced canines. It involves a multicenter, parallel 3-group randomized design across orthodontic departments in Sweden, Germany, and the UK. The study will compare outcomes between children who undergo extraction of the primary canine or space opening for the adult tooth versus those who receive no treatment. The primary outcome is the proportion of participants who avoid surgery after 18 months, while secondary outcomes include cost-effectiveness and the impact on surrounding teeth.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 10-11 years with one or both upper permanent canine teeth that are not palpable or show significant eruption differences.

Not a fit: Patients with buccal displacement of the canines, missing permanent lateral incisors, or severe dental crowding may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could reduce the need for surgical procedures in children with displaced canine teeth.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have suggested that early intervention can be effective, but this specific approach is being tested in a novel multicenter format.
