What this trial studies

This intervention aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Couple-Based Violence Prevention Education (CBVPE) on reducing intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy in Southern Ethiopia. The study will involve 864 participants, including 432 pregnant women and their male partners, who will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group receiving CBVPE or a control group receiving usual care. The intervention focuses on educating couples about the consequences of IPV, healthy relationships, and problem-solving skills. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires at baseline and after the intervention to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of IPV.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are couples where the woman is pregnant and has at least one live birth, residing in the study area for at least six months.

Not a fit: Patients with severe medical illnesses or communication problems, or those planning to move out of the study area within the next eight months, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce the incidence of intimate partner violence during pregnancy, improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While interventions addressing IPV during pregnancy are limited in Ethiopia, similar educational approaches have shown promise in other regions, suggesting potential for success.
