What this trial studies

This pilot randomized controlled trial aims to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of e-health enhanced motor-cognitive interventions for older adults with cognitive frailty who have been discharged from the emergency department. Participants in the intervention group will engage in three 90-minute sessions of physical and cognitive training each week for 12 weeks, using smartphone technology, while the control group will receive standard care. The study will evaluate changes in cognitive functions, physical functions, and frailty status between the two groups. The goal is to address the gap in services for older adults in emergency settings and improve their overall health outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are Cantonese-speaking older adults aged 60 and above, discharged from the emergency department, who have cognitive frailty and own a smartphone.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to consent, have severe communication barriers, reside in old aged homes, or have impaired mobility may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could enhance cognitive and physical functions in older adults, potentially reducing the risk of dementia and frailty.

How similar studies have performed: While motor-cognitive training has shown promise in previous studies, this specific e-health approach in a home setting is relatively novel.
