What this trial studies

This is a cluster pilot randomized trial comparing a one-time docudrama intervention to usual engagement among first-time whole blood donors. Randomization is stratified by site type (mobile vs fixed) with clusters at donation sites, and participants in the intervention arm watch the docudrama immediately after donating. All participants receive standard blood donor communications and are followed for six months to measure repeat donation attempts and retention. Secondary outcomes include donor attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention as potential mediators of donation behavior.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults (18+) who are first-time whole blood donors with the National Blood Service Ghana, eligible to donate again, reachable by phone, understand English, Twi, or Ga, and are willing to watch the docudrama.

Not a fit: People with more than one prior lifetime whole blood donation, those ineligible to donate, or those who cannot view or understand the video or be reached for follow-up are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the intervention could increase repeat donations and strengthen the local blood supply by improving donor retention.

How similar studies have performed: Behavioral and media-based interventions have shown modest gains in donation and retention in other settings, but delivering a docudrama to first-time donors in Ghana is a relatively novel approach.
