What this trial studies
This is an observational survey of caregivers of pediatric surgery patients at Nationwide Children's Hospital using a questionnaire to describe caregiver digital literacy. The study enrolls caregivers of children under 18 whose primary language is English, Spanish, Arabic, Nepali, or Somali. Investigators will measure prevalence of digital literacy and examine whether it differs by race, primary language, and neighborhood opportunity. Results will be used to identify groups who may need extra digital support for pre- and post-operative care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Caregivers of children under 18 presenting for surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital whose primary language is English, Spanish, Arabic, Nepali, or Somali are eligible.
Not a fit: Adults (patients aged 18 or older), wards of the state, caregivers missing address information, and those who do not speak the listed languages are not eligible and would not directly benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help hospitals target digital support and communication tools to caregivers who most need them, improving access to pre- and post-operative information.
How similar studies have performed: Previous research on digital literacy in healthcare populations has shown disparities by race, language, and neighborhood, but studies focused specifically on caregivers of pediatric surgical patients are limited.
