What this trial studies

This trial aims to pilot a digital, interactive decision aid designed to assist patients and providers in making informed choices about HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following sexual assault. The decision aid includes five sections that cover clinical factors, multimedia risk information, educational messaging about PEP, patient priority comparisons, and tailored feedback for shared decision-making. Given the urgency of initiating PEP within 72 hours of exposure, this tool seeks to enhance communication and clarity between patients and healthcare providers. The study addresses the inconsistency in offering PEP to sexual assault survivors, aiming to improve patient outcomes through better-informed decisions.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 18 and older who are seeking care within 72 hours of a sexual assault and can provide informed consent in English.

Not a fit: Patients who are under 18 years old, seeking care more than 72 hours after the assault, or those with minimal/low exposure risk will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this decision aid could significantly improve the uptake and understanding of HIV PEP among sexual assault survivors, leading to better health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using digital decision aids is gaining traction, this specific application for HIV PEP following sexual assault is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
