What this trial studies

This study aims to create an inpatient lung cancer screening program at a safety net hospital to address disparities in lung cancer mortality. It will utilize mixed methods, including shared decision-making and inpatient tobacco cessation counseling, to improve the uptake of lung cancer screening among high-risk patients. The program targets individuals aged 50-80 with a significant smoking history, focusing on those who are currently smoking or have recently quit. By integrating screening with tobacco cessation services, the study seeks to enhance patient outcomes and reduce barriers to care.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 50-80 with a history of smoking of 20 pack years or more, who are currently smoking or have quit within the last 15 years.

Not a fit: Patients under 50 or over 80 years of age, those with less than a 20 pack year smoking history, or who quit smoking more than 15 years ago may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce lung cancer mortality among high-risk populations by increasing access to screening and cessation services.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in implementing lung cancer screening programs, particularly in high-risk populations, indicating that this approach has potential.
