What this trial studies
This interventional trial compares culturally targeted HPV vaccine messages, general education-only messages, and no messaging to see which approach increases parents' intentions to vaccinate their daughters. Parents will view one of the message types and immediately report their vaccination intentions, and researchers will follow up six months later to record whether HPV vaccination was initiated. The study also measures activation of racism-related thinking and medical mistrust to understand how these factors influence message effectiveness. Messages were developed in collaboration with community members and a local health educator to reflect local cultural context.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Black/African American or White parents in Flint who have at least one daughter aged 8–17 who has not received any doses of the HPV vaccine.
Not a fit: Parents whose daughters have already started the HPV vaccine series, who do not identify as Black/African American or White, or who cannot participate in the Flint-based protocol are unlikely to benefit from this effort.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, culturally targeted messaging could increase HPV vaccine uptake among African American girls and help reduce cervical cancer disparities.
How similar studies have performed: Previous work on culturally tailored vaccine messaging has sometimes improved vaccine intentions and uptake in minority groups, but results have been mixed and often depend on local context.
