What this trial studies

This pilot clinical trial evaluates a culturally tailored computerized education program designed for hospitalized African-American patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study compares the effectiveness of this program, known as computerized adaptive education (CAE), against standard care in improving patients' knowledge about CKD self-care and renal replacement therapy (RRT) options. It also assesses whether CAE increases patients' intent to engage in CKD self-care practices and prepare for RRT. Outcomes are measured using various surveys to gauge knowledge and patient activation.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are African-American inpatients aged 18-70 with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 45.

Not a fit: Patients who do not self-identify as African American, are unable to consent, or have acute kidney injury will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly enhance patient understanding and engagement in managing chronic kidney disease, leading to better health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with culturally tailored educational interventions, suggesting a positive outlook for this approach.
