What this trial studies

This mixed-method study randomizes eligible bedside nurses to receive a structured cultural competence training based on the Gülbu Tanrıverdi Environment-Oriented Cultural Competence Model and uses a pre-test/post-test design to measure changes in nurses' cultural competence. Patient experience is captured through semi-structured interviews with adult international patients cared for in the same units to explore perceived changes in culturally competent care. Nurses must be currently working in units that care for international adult patients, have not previously received transcultural nursing training, and are not in managerial roles; nurses who lived abroad more than six months are excluded. The study is conducted at Koç University in Istanbul and combines quantitative competence measures with qualitative patient feedback to link training effects to patient perceptions.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are hospital nurses who provide care to international adult patients at Koç University, have not previously had transcultural nursing training, are not in managerial positions, and agree to participate.

Not a fit: Patients who are cared for by nurses who do not participate in the training, pediatric patients, or those whose care needs are unrelated to cultural preferences may not experience direct benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could lead to more culturally sensitive and respectful care for patients from diverse backgrounds, improving their experience and satisfaction.

How similar studies have performed: Previous cultural competence training studies have shown modest improvements in clinician knowledge and some gains in patient satisfaction, but results vary and high-quality randomized evidence remains limited.
