What this trial studies
This interventional program delivers a structured culinary curriculum to residents of medication-assisted therapy (MAT) recovery houses with the goal of increasing nutrition knowledge and confidence in cooking skills. Participants will be adults with substance use disorder who are receiving MAT and living in recovery residences in Texas, and must be able to speak English or Spanish and provide consent. The study will use pre- and post-intervention measures of nutritional knowledge and self-reported cooking confidence to gauge change. Sessions are provided through The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in collaboration with Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults with a substance use disorder who are receiving medication-assisted therapy, live in recovery residences in Texas, speak English or Spanish, and can give informed consent.
Not a fit: Individuals who cannot give consent, do not speak English or Spanish, are not living in Texas recovery residences, or are not receiving MAT are unlikely to be eligible or benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help participants gain practical cooking skills and nutrition knowledge that support healthier eating and daily living during recovery.
How similar studies have performed: Community-based culinary and nutrition education programs have shown improved knowledge and dietary behaviors in other populations, but application specifically within MAT recovery house residents is relatively untested.
