What this trial studies
This randomized clinical trial compares two cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) teaching interventions delivered to students in grades 1–6 at participating primary schools in Cuenca, Spain. Schools that consented and families who provided permission will have children receive one of the two classroom-based training methods, with instruction tailored to age and comprehension. Outcomes include measures of theoretical knowledge and practical CPR skill immediately after training and possibly at follow-up to assess retention. The trial follows the Kids Save Lives recommendations for school-based basic life support education and is led by the University of Castilla-La Mancha.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Spanish-speaking primary school students in grades 1–6 whose parents or guardians provide informed consent and who have no physical, mental, or cognitive conditions preventing participation.
Not a fit: Children who do not understand Spanish or who have physical, mental, or cognitive limitations that prevent participation are unlikely to benefit from the interventions.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase the number of children who can correctly perform basic life support and improve community bystander response to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
How similar studies have performed: Previous school-based programs such as the Kids Save Lives initiative have shown that teaching CPR to children can improve knowledge and willingness to act, so the approach builds on existing evidence.
