What this trial studies

The project developed and delivered a 20-hour Core Competency Training Course focused on safe feeding practices, oral care, dysphagia diet management, and nutrition support. It used a three-arm waitlist control design with a student immediate intervention group, a student waitlist control group, and an industry (working aides) group. Participants completed pre- and post-course assessments and some took part in qualitative interviews to measure changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Training was conducted over two years with participants recruited from multiple regions and outcomes compared within and between groups.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are final-year long-term care students (fifth-year junior college or third-year technical program) and experienced professional healthcare aides in Taiwan who can attend the full 20-hour course.

Not a fit: People whose care needs require specialized clinical interventions beyond feeding and oral support, or those not in long-term care settings, are unlikely to benefit directly from this training.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, long-term care residents could receive safer feeding and better oral and nutritional care, lowering risks like aspiration and improving quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: Previous competency-based and dysphagia-training programs have reported improved caregiver knowledge and some care process improvements, so this approach builds on existing, partly successful evidence.
