Continuous Glucose Monitoring Academy for Youth with Type 2 Diabetes
Randomized Control Trial Evaluating the Impact of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Academy Education Curriculum Versus Standard Care on Glycemic Outcomes for Youth With Type 2 Diabetes
NA · Children's Hospital Los Angeles · NCT06516640
This program will test whether a four-week CGM education curriculum with virtual coaching helps youth aged 8–21 with type 2 diabetes improve glucose control compared with standard education.

What this trial studies
Participants aged 8–21 with type 2 diabetes will complete a four-week CGM Academy education program that includes an online workbook, instructional videos, and virtual sessions with a diabetes educator. They will use their preferred continuous glucose monitor (Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre) and receive a six-month clinical follow-up. The trial compares the CGM Academy curriculum with standard education to determine feasibility, effects on CGM-derived glycemic metrics, and links between those metrics and diabetes distress and family responsibilities. Outcomes include feasibility measures, CGM metrics, and patient-reported process measures.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are youth aged 8–21 with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes who can speak, read, and write English or Spanish and are willing to use a Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre CGM and attend virtual sessions.
Not a fit: Those with known medical adhesive allergies that prevent CGM use, individuals outside the 8–21 age range, or people unable to participate in English or Spanish virtual sessions are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help youth with type 2 diabetes improve daily glucose control and self-management through targeted CGM education.
How similar studies have performed: CGM combined with education has improved glycemic control in adults and in youth with type 1 diabetes, but adapting this specific CGM Academy curriculum for youth with type 2 diabetes is relatively novel.
