What this trial studies

This study aims to co-design and pilot an intervention for children and young people (CYP) aged 12-18 years suffering from long COVID, focusing on improving psychological wellbeing and reducing breathlessness. The intervention will be developed collaboratively with CYP, incorporating their feedback and emphasizing creativity and playfulness. In the pilot phase, 40 participants will be randomly assigned to receive the new intervention alongside standard treatment, with various assessments conducted to measure improvements in mental health and respiratory function. The study will utilize established questionnaires to evaluate outcomes pre- and post-intervention.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children and young people aged 12-18 years who have been referred to the pan-London long COVID multidisciplinary team.

Not a fit: Patients without objective evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection or those with significant neurodevelopmental difficulties or high psychiatric risk may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly enhance the psychological and physical wellbeing of teenagers suffering from long COVID.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of co-designing interventions with young patients is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in improving outcomes for chronic conditions.
