What this trial studies
This randomized, 1:1, 30-day trial will assign 266 African American men in Oklahoma who are not up to date with PSA screening to use either the Connect2Care app or the U.S. Prevention Taskforce app. The study measures post-intervention differences in prostate cancer knowledge, perceived benefits and risks of screening, and readiness to complete a PSA test using validated self-report questionnaires. App engagement and accessibility will be tracked via self-report measures, and acceptability will be explored through semi-structured qualitative interviews. The trial will also analyze predictors of screening readiness across both arms.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Black/African American men aged 45–69 who live in Oklahoma, are not currently diagnosed with prostate cancer, are not up to date with PSA screening, and are willing to use a phone app for 30 days.
Not a fit: Men already up to date with PSA screening, those diagnosed with prostate cancer, or anyone unwilling to use a smartphone app are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the app could increase knowledge and motivation to pursue appropriate PSA screening, potentially enabling earlier detection of prostate cancer in this population.
How similar studies have performed: Some prior digital education and decision-aid interventions have improved prostate cancer knowledge and screening intentions, but there are limited rigorous RCT data specifically focused on African American men.
