What this trial studies

This is a two-arm cluster randomized trial enrolling 216 Latina mother–daughter pairs across 18 elementary schools to compare a 10-week physical activity program (Conmigo) with a 10-week attention-control healthy eating program. Sessions are delivered weekly by trained YMCA staff at participating schools and include activity sessions for girls plus behavioral and family-level strategies involving mothers. The trial uses a Hybrid Type 1 effectiveness-implementation design and will measure daughters' moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) over time while examining individual and family mechanisms of change. Outcomes will inform whether Conmigo increases MVPA and how the program could be scaled in school-community settings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Latina girls aged 8–11 who are not meeting CDC physical activity guidelines, and their primary female caregivers who speak English or Spanish and can attend weekly 10‑week sessions at their elementary school, are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Girls who already meet daily MVPA guidelines, mother–daughter pairs with medical conditions that preclude physical activity, or those unable to attend the weekly onsite sessions are unlikely to benefit from the program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, Conmigo could help Latina girls increase daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, strengthen mother–daughter support for exercise, and reduce the early decline in activity that contributes to health disparities.

How similar studies have performed: Prior formative work and an R21 pilot showed promising increases in MVPA from Conmigo, but larger cluster randomized testing is needed to confirm effectiveness.
