Conjunctival transposition surgery for primary pterygium

Conjunctival Transpositional Pterygium Surgery: A Prospective Single-Arm Interventional Study

NA · Zahedan University of Medical Sciences · NCT07343011

This surgery tries moving and repositioning your own pterygium tissue during the operation to see if it lowers regrowth and keeps the eye surface healthy in adults with primary pterygium.

What this trial studies

This prospective single-arm interventional protocol enrolls adults with primary pterygium and performs conjunctival transpositional surgery by mobilizing and repositioning the native pterygium tissue. The technique preserves Tenon's layer, avoids creating a bare sclera, and does not use adjunctive therapies such as mitomycin C or grafting. Participants are followed after surgery to record recurrence rate and functional outcomes including ocular surface health and visual symptoms. Patients with recurrent pterygium, prior ocular surface surgery, active infection, or severe ocular surface disease are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 years or older with a primary pterygium that involves the cornea and who can provide informed consent are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with recurrent pterygium, a history of prior ocular surface surgery, active ocular infection, or severe ocular surface disease are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the technique could reduce pterygium recurrence while preserving conjunctival tissue and avoiding grafts or adjunctive drugs.

How similar studies have performed: Conjunctival-sparing approaches and conjunctival autografts have shown good results in lowering recurrence, but purely transpositional techniques without adjuncts are less widely studied and have limited published outcome data.
