Computer-based support for diagnosing familial hypercholesterolemia
Clinical Decision Support for Familial Hypercholesterolemia: a Cluster Randomized Trial in the Primary Care Setting
This study is testing a computer program to help doctors find and manage patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic condition that causes high cholesterol, to see if it improves diagnosis rates over three years.

What this trial studies
This study evaluates a computer-based clinical decision support system in primary care to improve the identification and management of patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). It is a cluster randomized study that aims to increase the diagnosis rate of FH, which is often underrecognized and undertreated. The primary outcome is the number of patients diagnosed with FH thirty-six months after the initiation of the study. The intervention focuses on utilizing technology to enhance clinical decision-making in managing this genetic disorder associated with high cholesterol levels and increased risk of coronary artery disease.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients in primary care settings who may have familial hypercholesterolemia and are being managed for high cholesterol levels.
Not a fit: Patients who are not in primary care settings or those whose clinics do not utilize the Cambio Cosmic Electronic Health Record System may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly improve the diagnosis and management of familial hypercholesterolemia, leading to better patient outcomes and reduced cardiovascular risks.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using clinical decision support systems to improve diagnosis and management of chronic conditions, suggesting potential for this approach in familial hypercholesterolemia.
