Comparing walking patterns for people after stroke across overground, treadmill, and supported treadmill setups

Variability in Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters of Stroke Patients Across Overground, Self Paced Treadmill, and Body-Weight Supported Treadmill Walking

NA · Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology · NCT07034105

What this trial studies

Researchers will collect spatiotemporal gait parameters such as stride length, cadence, step time, and gait variability using advanced motion analysis while participants perform overground, self-paced treadmill, and body-weight-supported treadmill walking. Each participant completes all three modalities in a counterbalanced order to minimize order effects and allow direct within-person comparisons. The protocol includes a locally developed, low-cost body weight support system (BWSS) intended to increase accessibility in resource-limited settings. Data will be analyzed for variability and test-retest reliability across modalities to guide choice of measurement and rehabilitation approaches.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–75 who are at least one month post-stroke, able to walk with or without assistance, and able to give informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients with severe cognitive or communication impairments, significant joint malposition or other neuromuscular disorders, unstable cardiovascular disease, or pregnant women are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help clinicians choose the most reliable walking setup and support wider use of an affordable body-weight-support system to improve rehabilitation access and outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous work has shown differences between overground and treadmill gait measures, but applying and validating a low-cost, locally built body-weight-support system in this context is relatively novel.
