Comparing ultrasound and palpation for identifying the cricothyroid membrane

Ultrasound Versus Physical Examination for Cricothyroid Membrane Determination in Pediatric Patients

Marmara University · NCT05974540

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to compare the effectiveness of ultrasound versus palpation in identifying the cricothyroid membrane, which is crucial for performing emergency cricothyroidotomy. The study hypothesizes that ultrasound will provide a higher success rate in accurately locating the membrane compared to traditional palpation methods. Additionally, it will evaluate the relationship between difficult intubation and various anatomical measurements related to the cricothyroid membrane. The study will involve patients undergoing elective pediatric surgery who require intubation.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pediatric patients classified as ASA I or II who are scheduled for elective surgery and require intubation.

Not a fit: Patients with ASA III or higher physical status, those undergoing emergency surgery, or patients with a tracheostomy will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the accuracy of emergency airway access, potentially reducing complications during cricothyroidotomy.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of ultrasound in airway management is gaining traction, this specific comparison of ultrasound versus palpation for cricothyroid membrane identification is relatively novel.
