What this trial studies
This open-label, randomized controlled trial evaluates the effectiveness of Short Leg Walking Plaster Casts versus Walking Foot Plaster Casts in treating Jones fractures, which are common fractures at the base of the fifth metatarsal. Conducted at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, the study aims to assess differences in fracture healing and functional outcomes over six weeks. Patients will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups, with outcomes measured through radiographs and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS). The findings may help establish evidence-based treatment protocols for Jones fractures, particularly in low- and middle-income settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and above with un-displaced or minimally displaced Jones fractures presented within 7 days of injury.
Not a fit: Patients with significant foot swelling, open fractures, or other soft tissue pathologies may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve recovery and mobility for patients with Jones fractures without the need for surgical intervention.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited published data on the optimal casting method for Jones fractures, this trial represents a novel approach in a specific regional context.
