What this trial studies
This study investigates the impact of two different types of slowly absorbable sutures, PDS® and Monomax®, on the closure of emergency midline laparotomies. The aim is to determine if there are significant differences in outcomes between these two suture types, which are currently used interchangeably based on surgeon preference. Patients over 18 years old undergoing this type of surgery will be included, while those with prior midline surgeries will be excluded. The findings could help establish clearer guidelines for suture selection in emergency situations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old who require emergency midline laparotomy.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those who have previously undergone midline laparotomy will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved surgical outcomes and reduced complications for patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgeries.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on the specific comparison of these two sutures, similar studies on suture types in surgical closures have shown varying degrees of success.
