Comparing two techniques for facial symmetry after jaw reconstruction
Assessment of Facial Symmetry Following Fibula Free Flap Fixated in a Prosthetically Favorable Position Versus the Inferior Border Position for Mandibular Reconstruction: a Randomized Controlled Trial.
NA · Cairo University · NCT06790628
This study is testing two different ways to fix the jaw after reconstruction to see which one helps people have a more symmetrical face and feel happier with the results.

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the outcomes of facial symmetry following mandibular reconstruction using fibula free flaps. It compares two fixation techniques: one at the alveolar level, which is considered prosthetically favorable, and the other at the inferior border level, which is the conventional approach. The study is designed as a randomized controlled trial with parallel groups, assessing patient satisfaction and symmetry over a 12-month follow-up period. Patients with significant mandibular defects due to various conditions will be enrolled to determine the effectiveness of each technique.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients requiring mandibular reconstruction due to tumors, trauma, or osteomyelitis with defects greater than 9 cm.
Not a fit: Patients with systemic conditions that would contraindicate the surgical procedure may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve surgical techniques for mandibular reconstruction, leading to better facial symmetry and patient satisfaction.
How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored mandibular reconstruction techniques, this specific comparison of fixation positions is novel and has not been extensively tested.
