What this trial studies
This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two regional anesthesia techniques, the external oblique intercostal block and the subcostal transversus abdominis plane block, in providing pain relief during and after open nephrectomy in cancer patients. The research will utilize ultrasound guidance to administer these blocks and assess their impact on opioid requirements and patient satisfaction. Given the high incidence of postoperative pain associated with nephrectomy, this study seeks to establish a more effective analgesic approach to improve patient outcomes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are cancer patients aged 18-65 who are scheduled for open nephrectomy and classified as ASA class II or III.
Not a fit: Patients with ASA class IV, significant cognitive or psychiatric disorders, or those with a BMI over 35 may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved pain management strategies for patients undergoing open nephrectomy, reducing opioid use and enhancing recovery.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia techniques can effectively reduce pain and opioid requirements in similar surgical settings.
