Comparing two MRI techniques for assessing carotid artery plaques

Level of Agreement in the Assessment of Carotid Plaque Composition Between Multi-contrast and Multi-sequence MRI

Observational Maastricht University Medical Center · NCT04569006

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to validate two innovative multi-contrast MRI sequences, MATCH and BOOST, for quantifying atherosclerotic plaque components in comparison to traditional multi-sequence MRI and histology. The study focuses on patients with carotid artery plaques that are 2 mm or thicker, as these plaques pose a significant risk for stroke and myocardial infarction. By reducing the MRI scan time to under 6 minutes while maintaining high soft tissue contrast, the study seeks to improve patient comfort and clinical practicality. The study will involve a cross-sectional analysis of 40 patients to assess the effectiveness of these new imaging techniques.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 18 and older with carotid plaques measuring 2 mm or more.

Not a fit: Patients with smaller carotid plaques, severe co-morbidities, or contraindications for MRI will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to faster and more accurate identification of high-risk atherosclerotic plaques, improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using multi-contrast sequences is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in improving MRI efficiency and accuracy in plaque characterization.
