Comparing two methods of pain relief after single incision laparoscopic gastrectomy

Analgesic Efficacy of Ultrasound Guided Transversus Abdominis Plane(TAP) Block Versus Local Anesthetic Infiltration in Adult Patients Undergoing Single Incision Laparoscopic Gastrectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Phase 4 Interventional Seoul National University Bundang Hospital · NCT03805269

What this trial studies

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of ultrasonography-guided transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block versus local anesthetic infiltration for pain management in patients undergoing single incision laparoscopic gastrectomy. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the TAP block or local anesthetic infiltration at the incision site before surgery. The study will evaluate outcomes such as opioid usage, pain levels at 6, 24, and 48 hours postoperatively, incidence of vomiting, and length of hospital stay. This approach seeks to determine which method provides better pain control and recovery for patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old with ASA class I-II who are scheduled for single incision laparoscopic gastrectomy.

Not a fit: Patients with severe kidney or liver dysfunction or those allergic to local anesthetics may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved pain management strategies for patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown varying success in comparing TAP blocks and local anesthetic infiltration, but this specific approach in single incision laparoscopic gastrectomy is novel.
