What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of two different techniques for closing laparotomy incisions in infants and children: mass closure and layer by layer closure. The study is designed as a randomized controlled trial, enrolling participants under the age of three who require abdominal surgery. By comparing these two closure methods, the researchers hope to determine which technique may reduce the risk of incisional hernias and improve abdominal wall function. The trial is being conducted at Tanta University Hospitals from January 2020 to October 2024.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are infants and children under three years old who require a transverse laparotomy.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of previous abdominal surgeries or congenital abdominal wall defects may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved surgical outcomes and reduced incidence of hernias in young patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific comparison of these two closure techniques in this age group is novel, similar studies in adults have shown varying results regarding closure methods.
