What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to compare the effectiveness of two local anesthesia techniques, femoral nerve block (FNB) and suprainguinal fascia iliaca block (SiFi), in adults undergoing hip fracture surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either technique, and the study will assess their impact on pain levels and the amount of postoperative analgesics required. The focus is on improving pain management for elderly patients, who often experience significant discomfort and have multiple health concerns. The study seeks to provide evidence on which technique may offer better pain relief and reduce opioid use.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 or older who are scheduled for hip fracture surgery at the University of Alberta Hospital and are suitable for multimodal analgesia.

Not a fit: Patients who have contraindications to nerve block techniques or refuse consent for such procedures may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved pain management strategies for patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on the analgesic efficacy of SiFi blocks in other contexts, randomized controlled trials specifically for hip fracture surgery are limited, making this approach relatively novel.
