What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effectiveness of three different types of bonded retainers in maintaining dental stability after orthodontic treatment. It is a multicenter, randomized controlled trial with a 5-year follow-up, involving participants from dental centers in Örebro, Malmö, and Barcelona. Patients will be randomly assigned to one of three groups, each receiving a different type of retainer: a multistranded wire, a stainless steel chain, or a Memotain wire. The study aims to assess which retainer type best prevents teeth from shifting back to their original positions after braces are removed.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients who have recently completed orthodontic treatment and require a fixed retainer for their lower anterior teeth.

Not a fit: Patients with existing dental issues such as enamel damage or calculus on the lingual surface may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved long-term retention of dental alignment for patients after orthodontic treatment.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown varying success with different retainer types, but this specific comparison is novel.
