What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment for tooth crowding by comparing two groups of patients: one receiving fixed braces and the other not receiving any appliances. The study aims to determine if significant improvements in tooth alignment can occur without the use of braces, particularly in light of observations made during the COVID lockdown. Patients aged 13 to 30 with specific crowding measurements will be randomly assigned to either group, and their outcomes will be assessed. The trial seeks to provide insights into alternative orthodontic approaches.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 13 to 30 with permanent dentition and significant tooth crowding requiring extraction of specific premolars.

Not a fit: Patients requiring orthognathic surgery or with a history of orthodontic treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could offer a less invasive treatment option for patients with tooth crowding.

How similar studies have performed: While some observations during the COVID lockdown suggest potential for improvement without braces, this approach remains largely novel and untested in a controlled trial setting.
