Comparing preoperative carbohydrate loading to fasting for major abdominal surgery
Randomized Controlled Study of Preoperative Oral Carbohydrate Loading Versus Fasting in Patients Undergoing Major Abdominal Surgery

What this trial studies
This study aims to evaluate the effects of preoperative carbohydrate loading compared to traditional fasting protocols in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. It addresses the stress response and insulin resistance that can occur due to prolonged fasting before surgery. By administering a carbohydrate drink prior to surgery, the study seeks to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic state, potentially leading to better postoperative outcomes. The research will involve patients aged 21 to 70 who are scheduled for elective surgeries, assessing the impact of these two approaches on recovery.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 21 to 70 scheduled for elective major abdominal surgery with ASA physical status I or II.
Not a fit: Patients with disseminated malignant disease, emergency surgery needs, or those at high risk for aspiration may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance recovery and reduce postoperative complications for patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that preoperative carbohydrate loading can improve postoperative outcomes, suggesting this approach may be effective.
