Wound Catheter Vs LA Bolus in Renal Transplant: RCT

Observational The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust · NCT06011421

What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Continuous Local Anaesthetic Infiltration via Wound Catheter (LAWC) compared to a one-time Local Anaesthetic (LA) injection for pain management following kidney transplantation. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either the standard LA injection or the LAWC method, which delivers local anaesthetic continuously over time. The study aims to assess outcomes such as the amount of morphine needed for pain control, overall pain quality, and recovery improvements. By comparing these two approaches, the study seeks to identify the most effective pain management strategy for kidney transplant patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals undergoing primary single kidney transplantation who can provide informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients who have undergone midline laparotomy, dual kidney transplantation, kidney re-transplantation, multi-organ transplantation, are on long-term opiates, or have psychiatric illnesses may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to better pain management and improved recovery for kidney transplant patients.

How similar studies have performed: Similar studies using continuous local anaesthetic techniques in other surgical specialties have shown promising results, suggesting potential success for this approach in kidney transplantation.
