What this trial studies

This study aims to determine whether a single session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is as effective as three sessions for treating patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either one or three treatments, and their neurological outcomes will be measured to assess the effectiveness of each approach. Given the logistical challenges and costs associated with HBO treatment, understanding the optimal number of sessions is crucial for improving patient care. The study is conducted at the University of Alberta, which serves a wide geographic area in Canada.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 17 years old who have been referred to a hyperbaric unit for acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

Not a fit: Patients who are obtunded, mechanically ventilated, pregnant, incarcerated, or cognitively impaired will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could optimize treatment protocols for carbon monoxide poisoning, potentially improving patient outcomes and resource utilization.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding the number of hyperbaric treatments needed, making this a critical area for further investigation.
