What this trial studies

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of high versus low power settings during ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy for patients with renal stones. Patients aged 18 and older with stones measuring 8-25 mm will be randomly assigned to receive treatment using either low power settings (4-6 Watts) or high power settings (16-18 Watts) of a Thulium Fiber Laser. The primary outcome measured will be the operative time, while secondary outcomes will include stone-free rates, laser activation patterns, and complication rates. Follow-up will involve a low dose CT scan three months post-procedure to assess the success of the treatment.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older scheduled for ureteroscopic lithotripsy for renal stones sized between 8-25 mm.

Not a fit: Patients with concomitant ureteral stones, urinary diversion, active infections, or untreated cancer in the upper urinary tract may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to optimized laser settings that improve treatment efficiency and patient outcomes in kidney stone removal.

How similar studies have performed: While previous studies have shown the Thulium Fiber Laser to be effective, this specific comparison of high versus low power settings is novel and has not been tested in clinical trials.
