Comparing heart function measurements during surgery using different echocardiography views

A COMPARISON OF LEFT VENTRICULAR FUNCTION IN THE APICAL 4 CHAMBER AND SUBCOSTAL 4 CHAMBER TTE VIEWS IN THE PERIOPERATIVE SETTING: A PROSPECTIVE, CLINICAL TRIAL

University Hospital, Basel, Switzerland · NCT06366061

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the correlation and agreement of left ventricular function measurements obtained from two different transthoracic echocardiography views: the apical 4 chamber and subcostal 4 chamber views. It aims to address the challenges of obtaining accurate measurements in the perioperative setting, where patients may be ventilated or under anesthesia. The study will also explore the limitations of current technologies and the impact of patient positioning on measurement accuracy, particularly using newer speckle-tracking technologies that may offer more reliable results in these conditions.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are consenting adult patients undergoing elective non-cardiac surgery.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit include those with psychological disorders, dementia, or those requiring emergency procedures.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the accuracy of cardiac function assessments during surgery, leading to better patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using different echocardiography views is common, the specific application in the perioperative setting with a focus on speckle-tracking technology is relatively novel.
