Comparing full-mouth plaque scores with scores from select teeth using Dental Monitoring photos
The Effectiveness of Detecting Plaque on Tooth Surfaces Using Traditional and Artificial Intelligence Monitoring
This test sees if plaque measured on a few selected teeth or from Dental Monitoring photos matches plaque across the whole mouth in adult dental patients.

What this trial studies
Adult patients at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry will have intra-oral photos taken with a Dental Monitoring scan box once before and once after a disclosing solution is applied. Plaque on all tooth surfaces will be recorded using the O'Leary Plaque Index and full-dentition scores will be compared to scores from selected teeth. The observational protocol uses routine prophylaxis visits or designated clinic times and records only age as participant demographic information. Images and plaque data aim to determine whether single-tooth sampling or Dental Monitoring photos can reliably reflect whole-mouth plaque levels.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are UNMC College of Dentistry patients aged 19–85 who have at least one molar, premolar, or canine in each quadrant, at least 20 non-restored teeth, and no permanent dental devices such as braces or splints.
Not a fit: Patients with orthodontic appliances or splints, fewer than 20 non-restored teeth, those under 19, or those not treated at UNMC are unlikely to benefit from the findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this could speed up plaque tracking at appointments and enable remote monitoring to detect buildup earlier.
How similar studies have performed: Previous work supports selected-tooth sampling and intra-oral imaging for plaque measurement, but validation of Dental Monitoring photos specifically for plaque indexes remains limited.
