Comparing different ways to perform sit-to-stand tests for chronic lung disease patients

Comparing Centre-based, Remotely Supervised, and Self-administered Sit-to-stand Tests in Individuals With Chronic Respiratory Diseases

NA · West Park Healthcare Centre · NCT06479252

This study is testing different ways to do sit-to-stand tests for people with chronic lung disease to see which method works best for them, whether it's in a clinic, online with help, or on their own at home.

What this trial studies

This study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of sit-to-stand (STS) tests administered in three different ways: centre-based, remotely supervised, and self-administered, specifically for individuals with chronic respiratory disease (CRD). Participants will undergo both the 30-second and 1-minute STS tests across these conditions to determine how performance varies by administration method. The study aims to assess the acceptability and clinical utility of these tests in home-based settings, particularly in the context of virtual pulmonary rehabilitation. An initial orientation via videoconference will prepare participants for the testing process and data collection.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older with a physician diagnosis of chronic respiratory disease who can perform the STS tests without assistance.

Not a fit: Patients with recent lower limb surgery, those who are medically unstable, or individuals with significant balance issues may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a reliable method for assessing functional status in CRD patients from home, enhancing accessibility to pulmonary rehabilitation.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using remote supervision for rehabilitation assessments, but this specific approach to STS testing is relatively novel.

Eligibility criteria

Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

* Physician diagnosis of chronic respiratory disease (e.g., Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Interstitial Lung Disease, Asthma).
* Male and female patients ≥18 years of age.
* Able to perform at least 5 repetitions in the 1-min sit-to-stand test without use of upper extremities.
* Access to a portable pulse oximeter at home to measure heart rate and oxygen saturation.
* Access to technology for remote supervision (e.g., mobile phone, laptop/computer, iPad)

Exclusion Criteria:

* Lower limb surgery in the preceding 3 months.
* Medically unstable to perform exercise tests (e.g., no exacerbation in the preceding two weeks).
* Predominant neurological or musculoskeletal limitations to completing sit-to-stand.
* At risk of falling during sit-to-stand due to impaired balance, as indicated in their clinical record, and/or PR assessment.
