Comparing Canadian TIA Score and ABCD2 Score for Stroke Risk in TIA Patients

Canadian TIA Score Versus ABCD2 Score in Risk Stratification of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Bologna · NCT06718075

What this trial studies

This observational study evaluates the effectiveness of the Canadian TIA score compared to the ABCD2 score in predicting the risk of stroke or carotid revascularization in patients who have experienced a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Conducted at the Emergency Medicine department of IRCCS AOU di Bologna, the study will enroll approximately 800 adult patients over a 24-month period. Prognostic scores will be assessed at the time of admission, and follow-up will occur at 7 and 90 days post-admission to monitor outcomes. The goal is to identify high-risk patients for optimized management and treatment.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include all adult patients presenting to the emergency department with a diagnosis of transient ischemic attack.

Not a fit: Patients who do not present with a transient ischemic attack or those who cannot provide informed consent may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved risk stratification and management of patients following a transient ischemic attack, potentially reducing the incidence of subsequent strokes.

How similar studies have performed: While the ABCD2 score has been widely used, the Canadian TIA score is a newer approach that has not been extensively validated outside of Canada, making this study a novel investigation.
