What this trial studies

This trial aims to compare the outcomes of colostomy reversal in children who undergo either three days of bowel preparation or no bowel preparation at all. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will receive no mechanical bowel preparation and will be admitted one day before surgery, while the other group will undergo three days of preparation with dietary restrictions leading up to the procedure. The study will evaluate key outcomes such as anastomotic leakage, surgical site infections, and length of hospital stay to determine the effectiveness of bowel preparation in this context.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 1 to 15 years who have undergone colostomy.

Not a fit: Patients who are malnourished or have a previous history of colostomy site anastomotic leakage may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into optimal preoperative care for children undergoing colostomy reversal, potentially reducing complications and hospital stays.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored bowel preparation in adults, this specific approach in children is less common and may provide novel insights.
